Shibden Hall
Those familiar with BBC’s ‘Gentleman Jack’, a dramatisation of the diaries of Anne Lister, the famous landowner, businesswoman, traveller and lesbian of 1830’s Halifax, may recognise Shibden Hall, which was her family home.
Shibden was a short walk downhill from Law Hill House, and again, it is highly likely that Emily Brontë was familiar with its exterior. With its rolling parkland and half-timbered frontage, the hall could have inspired elements of Thrushcross Grange, home of the aristocratic Linton family in Wuthering Heights.
It is unlikely that Emily and Anne Lister met, but the diarist was in the social circle of Miss Patchett who ran the school at Law Hill.
