High Sunderland Hall
Across the valley from Law Hill, again perched on top of a prominent hill, was the dramatic hulk of High Sunderland Hall.
Emily would have been able to see the house from Law Hill, and must have ventured over to it on one of her walks. The exterior was ornately decorated with carved stone detailing, statues and coats of arms. Its doorway was adorned with large cherub figures and in Wuthering Heights, Emily writes:
“Before passing the threshold, I paused to admire a quantity of grotesque carving lavished over the front, and especially about the principal door, above which, among…shameless little boys, I detected the date ‘1500’ and the name ‘Hareton Earnshaw."
Unfortunately, the house was demolished in the 1960s due to disrepair and lack of funds.
