I read a wonderful article today which helped to balance some of the selfishness that goes on in the world. We're used to hearing about treasures having to be saved from export abroad, or paintings being hidden away in bank vaults as investments. However, as an antidote to all that, a guy has just donated his entire collection of paintings, including his house, to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield. He did this because he needed a home for his vast collection and because he 'liked the space'. Good on him!
Art needs to be seen, not hidden away!

Welcome to my new website and blog!
Here you will find news of upcoming paintings, exhibitions, workshops - or simply my thoughts on what is happening in the wonderful world of art. I’m going to kick off with the great news that David Hockney is to have a retrospective exhibition of his work at Tate Britain next year. The guy is 79, and whatever your view is about his work, there’s no denying that he is still pushing the boundaries of colour and embracing new technologies in a big way. Being a fellow West Yorkshireman, I find it fascinating that such a wealth of international talent springs from the county. Well worth a visit is Salts Mill in Bradford, which houses a collection of Hockney originals. Nearby in Leeds is the Henry Moore Foundation as well as the Barbara Hepworth Museum in Wakefield. Don’t get me started on the literary heritage! |
